Thanks to a bunch of “hackers” over at personal-view.com
like Vitaly Kiselev, CBrandin, Driftwood and LPowell the GH1 and GH2′s stock
video bit rate can be expanded from the AVCHD standard of 24 mbps to close to
200 mbps.
Why does this matter? Well, in non-technical terms,
the camera initially captures light and its resulting image onto the sensor
before being encoded and recorded. The encoding process compresses the
raw image off the sensor and keeps it at the 24 mbps standard. This
creates compression issues like macro-blocking and loss of detail.
The hack and subsequent patches allow for less compression resulting
in a higher quality recorded image and a much better base for color correction
and grading in post-production.
